Valley Woman Honored for Health Services

Ann Gibson Bertero’s first volunteer service came during high school, making baby blankets and tray favors for maternity patients at Los Angeles County Women’s Hospital.

This year, she’s being honored for her volunteer contributions to health and human services in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Valley Man Honored for 4-H Work

Randy Jones has never had a dull moment since moving to the Santa Ynez Valley permanently in 1965... including his early involvement in 4-H.

Now he's being honored for volunteering to help young people, particularly in 4-H.

Fish & Game President Refuses to Resign

The embattled president of California's Fish and Game Commission pushed back at his critics Tuesday, telling them he did nothing wrong by killing a mountain lion on a big game hunt in Idaho. And he vowed not to resign.

"While I respect our Fish and Game rules and regulations, my 100 percent legal activity outside of California, or anyone else's for that matter, is none of your business," Dan Richards wrote in a letter to state lawmakers calling for his ouster.

Popular Valley Photographer Remembered

A memorial service for popular valley photographer Geoffrey Grant will be held Sunday afternoon at Refugio Beach.

Grant, 60, died Feb. 3 from burns suffered in an accidental fire at his home on Figueroa Mountain.

Therapeutic Riding Program to Honor Evans

The Santa Ynez Valley Therapeutic Riding Program is honoring Mary Ann Evans, Ph.D., for her 22 years as president and founder during a luncheon Saturday, Feb. 25.

The event will be held at the Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort’s Sycamore Room from noon to 1:30 p.m.

In recognition of the innumerable hours they have volunteered to the Santa Ynez Valley, Frank Kelsey and Terry Ames have been selected man and woman of the year, to be honored in March along with Richard Christensen for his lifetime achievement in community service.

After almost a decade as the public voice, and many times the face, of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, Frances Snyder has resigned from her position as the tribe’s public relations director.
