SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A warning for those who love mussels. According to the Calfornia Department of Public Health, there is a quarantine on some.

From the CDPH: An annual quarantine of all sport-harvested mussel species along the California coast is now in effect according to the California Department of Public Health. The quarantine is in place to protect the public against poisoning as the toxins found in mussels can lead to severe illness and death.

This warning does not apply to commercially sold clams, mussels, scallops or oysters. State-certified commercial shellfish harvesters or dealers are permitted to sell these products which are subject to frequent mandatory testing to ensure they are safe for consumers.

Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and domoic acid poisoning (DAP) are both linked to microscopic plankton that are concentrated in filter-feeding animals.

UCSB Scientist Say, "Your Brain... Like a Cable Network"

UCSB Scientist Say, "Your Brain... Like a Cable Network"

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - University of Santa Barbara neuroscientists have a new study dealing with the connectivity in the human brain.  According to UCSB, "White matter functions like cable networks to connect different brain areas"

Take a look at the findings:

The human brain is one of the most complex systems both in terms of its structural organization and of the diverse functionality that structure supports. One of the great challenges in modern neuroscience is to understand how human cognitive function arises from interactions between different regions of the brain.

Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, researchers at UC Santa Barbara have identified organizational features of human brain anatomy that support coordinated changes in functional brain activity when an individual is at rest, attending to a visual task, or remembering something such as a word or face.
